Chery teaches in the area of community nutrition and has a special interest in the socio-cultural aspects of food, nutrition, and health; and in international nutrition. Her research focuses on how changes in environment, age, socio-economic status, and globalization influence the nutritional status, dietary intake, and health of selected segments of the population. Domestically, she has worked primarily with minority populations (Asian, African, and Native Americans) and internationally she has worked with Sherpas in Nepal and with the Farmer-to-Farmer Program in Africa. Chery holds a Ph.D. in anthropology from Indiana University (1994) and an M.P.H. in human nutrition from the University of Michigan (1982). She has worked as the director of nutrition and clinic services for the Indiana WIC Program and as director of the Indiana Breastfeeding Promotion Project.
